I'm lovin' all these custom orders.

Just finished these for Leigh Ann's wedding:

When we first got to talking she asked if I could do custom colors and I was like, "Of course!"

I freaked out a little because I just wasn't sure about the color combination she asked for

but I came up with an idea. I asked for a picture of the fabric she was using

for her table decor and she sent me this photo:

Believe it or not seeing something on a computer screen and seeing it in real life is dramatically different.

So what I decided to do was send her a little color sample sheet via Etsy conversation and she was stoked!

I had her print it out to see which matched up.

She decided to go with #4.

I sent over a few samples in the 2 sizes I have available, easy as pie.

Made a little adjustment to the yellow and she was super happy!

Made me realize these tags may be just what brides are looking for.

It's funny, because right after I'd gotten through with this I was showing a new friend at work

my Etsy shop and she saw my pink and blue tags and said she wished she'd known for her wedding.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A: We are Infused Design’s founders, Jonathan & Katie Boris of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After hitting it off in March of 2006 while attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh we've been together ever since. Married on May 15, 2010 we live with our Great Dane- Etta & cats Kovu & Kiara.

Jonathan received an Associate of Science in Photography. He is the creative eye behind the camera, capturing amazing shots & stunning photographs from around the world. His travels include Australia, New Zealand, Africa & most recently Costa Rica & Nicaragua for our honeymoon.

I (Katie) received a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. My daily job is retail design but my involvement with Infused Design’s shop includes marketing & managing the business transactions. I love the endless possibilities of creativity, dabbling in photography & some graphic design work on the side.

Q: If you were stuck on a desert island with just 3 things, what would they be?

A: Jon- My wife, the best home theatre system in the world with an endless supply of movies & Marisa Miller. ;)

Katie- My husband, family photos & an MP3 player for my music/ singing- obsession. :)

Q: Your work is lovely. What inspires you?

A: Jon- Nature! Since I was a kid, I've loved nature in general, but more importantly animals. I've always kept exotic pets like red-eyed tree frogs, chameleons, blue-tongued skinks, etc... and being able to capture them, along with the great outdoors through how I see them, is just amazing. Then being able to pass my vision along to others is a great gift.

Katie- Architecture, cityscapes & materials. With my background in Interior Design, my eye is drawn to interesting architecture, textures & details. With a love for architectural history, I love finding landmarks & ornate details to capture.

Q: Tell me about your favorite photograph.

A: Katie- "Lake McKenzie in Fraser Island, Australia" from Jon's trip. With prints of this photo hanging everywhere, I like to pretend I'm sitting on the beach & someday in the near future Jon plans to take me there himself.

Jon- "Butterfly in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, Africa". Although rather uneventful in terms of color, the simplicity of the picture and the way the sunlight catches off the corner of the butterflies wing has always put a smile on my face.

Q: Do you do any other type of crafting or art?

A: Jon has a creative eye for color (as you can see in his photos) & dabbles with Photoshop from time to time.

I (Katie) have been drawing since the age of 6 & am currently learning/ practicing watercolor painting. I love to learn new art forms & particularly admire the art of letterpress, which I hope to learn some day. (Me, too!)

Q: Why Etsy?

A: When planning our wedding, we came across the wonderful world of Etsy while shopping for invitations. Given our artistic backgrounds, we knew we wanted something slightly non-traditional & being able to work one-on-one with a designer was ideal. After this transaction, I was hooked & began adding favorites, buying gifts, the list goes on! We realized that this would be a great online venue for Infused Design. We tried creating our own website in the past but Etsy was exactly what we needed for traffic.

My Etsy Christmas List .........What Happened?

I know a few of you were following my list, I appreciate the wonderful comments.

When I decided to do it, I had determined that I wasn't going to let anything get in the way of me finishing that list. Then life happened.

After spending the last month and a half preparing for a craft fair, working my heart out setting it up and tearing it down, then blogging away, frantically working on Etsy postings and orders I began to start working on my own family's Christmas presents. That was going okay, but let's just say with 3 kids and 2 "real" jobs, I wasn't making as much progress as I'd like. About a week ago I put it in overdrive and my house was instantly a giant mess. This last Monday I peeled myself out of bed after a terrible nights sleep and went to work. Work did not go well. I saw about half of my patients and decided I'd better head home.

Next thing I knew I was feverish, laying on the couch, crying about anything and everything for no apparent reason. Over the next 2 days I would get these crazy fevers that lasted about 2 hours. Tylenol did absolutely nothing to ease the pain or bring down the fevers. I missed work Tuesday, and my "day off" Wednesday, if you know what I mean.

Finally I was free of the fever by Wednesday night, but I had to work all day Thursday and Friday. So here I am, Christmas Eve, exhausted. Needless to say, I'm not going to finish my list.

But I will share with you an adorable picture of my children!

Meet the Artist and Giveaway: Monica the Handprint Lady

If you haven't heard, I'm a member of the Etsymom Team.

Through this group I've had the pleasure of meeting Monica, the Handprint Lady.

Turns out, Monica lives 5 minutes away from where I work!

We've decided to team up to offer one lucky winner their choice of an item from her shop!

Monica made me a gorgeous ornament for my baby, and I LOVE it.

I was thrilled that she offered, it's actually a tradition to get hand print ornaments for each child for their first Christmas. For my first child someone gave me a kit. It's precious because it preserves that sweet little handprint, but it's extremely heavy and lacks sheen. For my second I decided to try a lighter kit. It turned out alright, but it certainly isn't elegant, and while I was going for lighter, I didn't think it would be as light as a paper clip. My third child lucked out, Monica made it! It's very similar to the one above.

It was pretty easy, Monica gave me a kit with simple directions. It took a few tries, but none the less I managed to get a good impression. Before I knew it Monica had created a gorgeous ornament.

It's just the right size, just slightly bigger than the impression.

It isn't huge and thick so it doesn't weigh down a whole tree branch.

And it has a beautiful luster and shiny red ribbon.

I'll be showing you more creations as we get to know the artist

and more about her process.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: I’m 46, mother of 6 children, and haven’t slept in 21 years.

Q: How did you get started in ceramics?
A: Well, I tried to play the piano, that didn’t work out. I like to sing, but no one likes to listen, (except my babies), and so I prayed for some talent other than having babies. And boom, there it was!

Q: Your items are gorgeous! I can tell you put a lot of time and energy into every detail. Tell us a little about the process.
A: The ceramic process itself is extremely labor intensive. Then, add the whole “prints by mail “ into it, and then it really gets complicated. I send the mold kit to the customer, and they make a print for me. They send it back. I then take my sculpting skills and make a 2 dimensional image into a 3 dimensional sculpture. I then prepare the clay, roll the clay, stamp the clay, dry the clay, sand the clay, fire the clay the first time at 1940 degrees F for 12 hours, then wait two days for it to cool, unload the kiln, then clean the plaques (drilling, sanding) and then paint the plaques, then I glaze the plaques, and then load the kiln again for a second firing to 1818 F for 8 hours, then another 2 days to cool. Quite often there is some flaw, and so I have to refire the plaque. Sometimes it breaks, and I have to do the whole thing over again. Then I have some drilling, threading of ribbons, and the whole sending through the mail part. There are a lot of other in between steps that no one sees; like sieving and mixing my glazes, constantly babysitting my clay so it does not dry out, or if it does, the whole re-wetting process, or vacuuming out my 4 foot kiln, or drilling my stilt points sharp or kiln washing my shelves. And don’t even get me started on shipping, and bookkeeping! It is exhausting, but worth it.

Q: Any new products on the horizon?
A: Yes! My newest products are personalized porcelain ornaments for Christmas! My new ornaments are in my shop and my “other” shop, monichlasich.

Q: We've had the pleasure of talking face to face about our adventures both on Etsy and locally. Any thoughts on that you'd like to share with my readers?
A: I’ve been on ETSY since 2005, and it has changed a lot. I’m trying to really reach out and make relationships now. Working alone in my garage can get pretty isolated. I love sharing tips, and learning new things on pottery chat boards, and etsy teams, and other groups I associate with, like Freecycle.

Q: We've also talked up a storm about the Etsymom team, that's how we met! I understand you are part of another Etsy team. What have you gained from those experiences?
A: Some wonderful tips ! Just meeting you was a wonderful experience to make this whole “internet” shop seem more tangible. It’s all about relationships for me now.

Q: Where do you see yourself/your business headed over the next couple years?
A: I see myself teaching. I was born to teach ceramics. I am trying to come up with a plan to teach what I know using current technology like Skype, and webchat, and dvd’s. I really want to do more craft fairs because they are so much fun. I love meeting people!

A: I am really passionate about buying handmade. I do all of my holiday and birthday shopping at craft fairs or Etsy. I want my money to go to a family. I love that my gift is one of a kind original. I love getting to know someone by purchasing their craft.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A: I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, but skipped town the day after I graduated high school in order to pursue my life adventure. After a two-year detour in Colorado, I made my way to Austin, Texas where the friendly atmosphere, culture and my lovely Austin family number as some of the many reasons I am fortunate to live here still.

I keep myself busy as a full-time student double majoring in English and Psychology, working part-time for the National Dating Abuse Helpline, and running my shop while trying my hand at local craft shows. When I grow up I want to be a writer, a counselor, a full-time crafter, or a librarian.

Q: How did you get started as an artist?

A: My mother and grandmother both sew, and my other grandmother knits, which is where I’m sure I got it from! When I was a kid, I always preferred to sew by hand. I made small, scraggly quilts out of fabric scraps that I tried to force our cats to sleep on.

When I started college, I tried many hobbies in order to find something to soothe the nerves that began to react to juggling several part-time jobs, a full-time course load and the ill effect of a poor economy. I taught myself how to crochet, and instantly fell in love – the meditative quality to it was just what the doctor ordered.. I began to spend more and more time on it before I even realized what I was doing, and soon enough, I began my own business.

Q: What inspires your work?

A: I began by making things that I wanted to wear, but couldn’t seem to find anywhere. It was a revelation to me to learn the skills to simply create what I wanted. As I continued to work, I fell in love with accessories that told a story – more specifically, the story of the crafty, inspired individual who would wear them. I began making button earrings and hair pins from the supplies I’d accumulated, and adored wearing them myself, so decided to share them with others. Beyond that, I continue to gain inspiration from looking at all of those accessories I’ve looked at and said to myself “I WISH it did this…”

Q: Why Etsy?

A: A dear friend, Betsy Schairer, (of http://betsyschairer.4ormat.com/) started out her creative career selling her original artwork and modified vintage clothing on Etsy several years before I gave it a try. I was such a fan of the concept and of her work, that I was a patron of her shop nearly as long as she ran it.

I not only adore buying handmade, I also love how accessible and appealing Etsy makes it. Etsy has grown in popularity to such a degree since I first became aware of it that it was a no-brainer decision for me when it came time to choose what online storefront to use. The terms they set for their artists are so reasonable!

Q: You've been very successful in a relatively short period of time. Do you have any advice for new shop owners?

A: It’s important to develop a cohesive focus before opening up shop – thinking about branding, who your audience is, and how to reach that audience are all good questions to ask yourself before you start. “The Handmade Marketplace” by Kari Chapin is a great book to read that covers those topics at length, with great anecdotes from successful artists.

Also, reach out and see what local resources you have! Chances are there is someone in your area that’s been successful doing the very same thing. I joined the Austin Craft Riot team (www.austincraftriot.com) nearly as soon as I went into business, and I am infinitely grateful that I did. Most cities have some sort of Etsy team, or some other professional organization that you can join to grow and promote your business.

Q: What future plans do you have for your shop/work?

A: I am always trying to push the envelope of what I can produce, and attempting new designs. I have a lot of ideas – I’d like to become more successful at local shows, and perhaps carry my work into the storefront retail world. I’m considering opening different shops for different lines of work all under the Blue Couch Designs banner. I’m also considering a curated shop containing items all donated by artists to raise money for charities in need. Really, I plan on simply moving forward in every way that I can, in the hopes that hard work and dedication continues to open doors.

Q: Anything else you'd like us to know?

A: I’d really like a cat. I got a goodie bag from a local craft show I participated in, and there was a cat toy in the bag. I thought maybe it was a sign. So, maybe if I put this thought out there into the universe, it'll happen!

Q: Just for fun, what are a few of your favorite shops on Etsy?

A: I’ll give you three ---

I absolutely adore the Ukranian embroidery that Ms. Natalka of Skrynka makes. I purchased one of her necklaces last summer, and I wear it all the time.

I have also long been fascinated with embroidery hoop and cross-stitch art – it was, in fact, the first serious foray into crafting that I made as an adult, with less than satisfactory results. But why even try when there are amazing people out there like Moxie Doll, already doing a bang-up job?

I wouldn’t have made it as far as I have without the help and my best friend and best boo, Faith, and all of her encouragement. She also has an adorable shop, Oh Thanks that you should all go check out immediately.

We created our Etsy shop to support our family by doing something that brings joy to others, is gentle on Mother Nature, and allows us to give back to our community (we donate to Peace Corps youth projects for every toy we sell).

The name Smiling Tree Toys reflects our love of and appreciation for Mother Nature. A: Depends on the day (just kidding)! Some days are harder than others, but all-in-all it certainly beats working a 9-5 job for somebody else!

Q: Where did you learn to woodwork?
A: Justin's always been passionate about working with his hands and we both hold a deep admiration for trees and natural life. Justin has lots of experience building houses, and over the years he's gradually taught himself the more detailed work of making toys, cutting boards, and other wooden items.

Q: Your toys are lovely, such a wonderful idea. What was your inspiration?
A: Our design inspiration comes to us in many, sometimes unexpected, ways. Often it’s when we’re playing with our daughter, nieces, and nephews. Other times it’s every day household items and the way our little one interacts with them that get the creative juices flowing. (You know, all of the things that aren’t made for kids but that they insist on playing with instead of their toys…)

Q: What do you think sets your shop apart from other similar shops on Etsy?
A: We're in love with what we do (we're so lucky!), and that shows through in all facets of our shop - original designs, attention to detail, our story, the "human" factor that's always present in our descriptions, extra-friendly customer service, and that we use our very own homegrown organic wood finish. A: Oh, where do we begin? We’ve got oodles of new and different design ideas up our sleeves. Like most small business owners, our minds never stop running.
