Pantone Spring Color Trends 2015

In business, my go-to for color combinations is Pantone. So I thought I'd give them a try for spring 2015 fashion trends as well. I'm loving the cooler, softer side of the colors in the latest report.

Now, we all have different skin tones and colors aren't one size fits all.
If they were, how boring would shopping be?! But Pantone gave us 10 colors to work with, and a thousand ways to interpret them. I'll show you all of the colors later on, but first, here are a few pretty things to look at. I just picked them up at Marshalls and I think they work well with my complexion while keeping up with the latest spring trends.

Nine West Mixed Print Zipper Tote & Crocs Crocband Flats

So, you know how subscription box profiles always ask what color you never wear? Well, mine is yellow. So when I saw these shoes in the store I was hesitant. But when I found the purse, I knew it was kismet. I most definitely can't do custard yellow (PANTONE 13-0720), but I think I can do canary. I think accessories are a great place to try out new colors.

Crocs Crocband Flats in Canary Yellow

For some reason when I took this picture I thought about Easter egg hunting. By the way, this picture is from the park. These shoes are perfect for on the go moms. I traipsed through sand, wildflowers, and who knows what else that day and they still look brand new! They were $14.99 at Marshalls. But if you don't have time to go looking for them, you can buy them here.

Crocs Crocband Flats & Naked Baby Legs

As much as I was worried about the color on the shoes, I was even more uncertain about the pattern of the tote. But it actually works with a lot of my clothes, like this Lucky Brand Paisley Floral Top.

Lucky Brand Paisley Floral Top
& Modern Straight Destructed Degree Blue Jeans

I love these jeans. They were the first thing I bought after I had the baby, and I'm tempted to buy more! I love Loft's modern straight fit, and the destructed degree blue wash is not at all as ridiculous as most distressed jeans are.

I was tempted to type in the lyrics of a popular children's rhyme here about myself and these new items....

Anyhow, here are the actual colors Pantone recommends for spring 2015.

The lucite green (PANTONE 14-5714) in the purse was what sold me. Are you seeing the strawberry ice & classic blue, or is it just me? And again, I gladly accept canary as a substitute for custard yellow.

Here's a close up so you can see a little more detail on the Nine West tote. Did I mention it was $19.99? I searched for it FOREVER online to no avail. Boo, sorry readers, have to hit a store.

Nine West Zipper Tote from Marshalls

Doing this made me realize, I need a little more color in my life.

I'm debating requesting a few of these in my next Stitch Fix vs shopping around. Vs both.

I noticed these cool and casual tanks from Golden Tote come in this lucite-ish green, as well as a blue, pink, orange and yellow that are right on point.

Got the spring fever yet?

Here's a list of the Pantone Spring 2015 colors with links to details about each one, including recommended combinations and Designer sketches using the colors.

Short story: When I was starting out on Etsy it was hard to make a sale. I joined the EtsyMom Team. They had a group challenge, we had to create a new product for our shop using a Pantone Fall 2011 color palette. I still attribute a great deal of my success to work I put into that project & the popularity of the chevron tags I created. I think of this whenever I think about Pantone colors.

Enough rambling. I'd love to see/hear about what you are doing for color inspiration!

Have a bright & colorful day.

Meet the Artist: Jenny from Flanders Field Photography

I am a HUGE fan of great photography. This is why I've been dying to introduce you to Jenny from Flanders Field Photography! She was kind enough to donate this print for the Family Tree Giveaway

It is really spectacular, I know some luck winner is going to love it. I know because I've seen it up close, and also because I've been enjoy the print Jenny sent me:

Hello Dolly Pink - 8x10 Fine Art Nature Photograph - Dahlia Closeup - IN STOCK

I first fell for dahlias when a friend of mine brought in a huge, red dinner plate dahlia. Someday I'll grow them, but for now I'm enjoying the magic Jenny captured instead.

Blue - 8x10 Fine Art Nature Photograph - Glacier

Jenny has a gift for capturing the beauty in both the surreal and everyday life.

Wonder - 5x7 Fine Art Photograph - Bubbles on Green
Buy it here
A great photograph can take you back to a time and place. This one transports me to my Mom's backyard where we celebrated Mother's day a few years back. My children were captivated by bubbles floating through the air that beautiful Sunday afternoon.

A great print can also ignite a desire to do something, as this does me to take a "Sunday drive":

Fiesta - 8x10 Black and White Metallic Classic Car Photograph - IN STOCK
Buy it here

The photographs in Flanders Field will make you see things from a new perspective (more on that, below):

Fizz - 8x10 Fine Art Photograph - Effervescence in Aqua - IN STOCK
Buy it here
Something I really appreciate in an Etsy store is a variety of ways to enjoy the artwork. Flanders Field offers prints in various sizes as well as cards, pendants and coasters.

Let's get to know the mastermind behind the work:

Q: How did you get started with photography?
A: I took it up as a hobby when my boys were tiny (they are seven and six now). Photography was the thing I  did for me after taking care of other people all day.

Q: Do you remember the first picture you took?
A: As an adult, the first photography I consider "artistic" was of some cherry blossoms. I took it while on a walk with my husband, parents and infant son on the University of Washington campus. I still have it on display in my office, where no one else can see it! The first picture I took that I'm not embarrassed to list is "Snow Orchard."

Q: Use 3 words to describe your photos/style.
A: Abstract, colorful, detailed

Q: What do you think makes your pictures/style unique?
A: One of my friends once described my photos as "geometric." I have an engineering background, and I think it comes into play when I'm setting up a shot.

Q: How do you come up with the clever names of your photos?
A: The names for my photos usually pop into my head based on what the image reminds me of. It's harder with some photos than others, though, and I think I'm almost at the end of my vocabulary! Don't tell anyone, but I've actually recycled a couple of names. ;-)

Q: What picture(s) are you most proud of?
A: I'm most proud of the images that I think might make people see the world in a differemt way (or at least take a closer look, like this one.

Q: Who/what inspired you?
A: Some of my influences have been Art Wolfe, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Mother Nature. I'm also inspired by architectural details, but I rarely have time to pull out my camera when I'm in a city environment.

Q: What is the most popular item in your shop?
A: "Wonder" is probably most popular at the moment. Other bestsellers are "Sparklers", "Touch", and "Translucence." "Hello Dolly Pink" is popular as a note card

Q: Do you have any advice for new shop owners?
A: I think it's really important to explore Etsy. Click around on the Buy page and experiment with the search so you understand all the ways your items can be found. The Forums and the Storque (Etsy's Blog) are great resources!

Q: Just for fun, what is the last item you bought yourself on Etsy?
A: My last Etsy purchase was a beautiful bag from bayanhippo

Be sure to check out Flanders Field on Etsy and Facebook and show Jenny some love :)

Also, don't forget to take advantage of the exclusive coupon code Jenny is offering during the Family Tree Giveaway. Use the code MODERN10 at checkout to receive 10% off your entire purchase!

I feel like taking pictures! (Cut to scene where children are all demanding something from me...) Or, perhaps buying a few...

Thanks Jenny, best of luck with your shop! Hope to have you back again soon.

Meet the Artist: Star from Vreeland Design

It is my pleasure to introduce you to Star from Vreeland Design. Star has graciously agreed to offer one lucky winner of the Family Tree Giveaway a set of her beautiful Gingko thank you cards!

Ginkgo screen printed thank you card on eco friendly papers

Star's stationery is not your run-of-the-mill stationery; quality papers are impressed with rich, gorgeous screen printed images she designed herself.

Star sent me a sample pack of these designs:

Nature motif screen-printed blue and white wedding Invitation

I love the contrast of the white stem flower against the blue. The navy cardstock has a luxurious texture, and really compliments the lighter shade of blue.

Nature print silkscreened Save the Date card

I appreciate the simplicity of the green tea Save the Date. It has an earthy, natural feel to it.

Four little birds screen-printed in metallic gold save the date card

I'm especially fond of the delicate fonts used on Vreeland Design. And I just cannot get over the shimmer of the metallic gold ink! I took a close up so you can see the effect when the ink meets the grain of the paper.

Both the timber green and eggplant papers go well with the metallic gold artwork.

Star sent a thank you card with her lavender artwork on speckled paper. The purple ink of the flowers really brings out the specks in the paper.

Let's see what Star had to say about herself and her Vreeland Design:

Q: How did you get started on Etsy?
A: The second I discovered Etsy I knew we were going to be a perfect match! At the time, I was a new mom looking for a way to be a stay at home mom to my little baby boy. I first started selling notecards and then it developed into block print wedding invitations. My little business grew to where I was screen-printing invitations, save the dates, and thank you cards. I've now been selling on Etsy for four years and I love it! I've been lucky to work with some really great Etsy brides.

Q: What is your favorite item in your shop, and why?
A: My favorite pieces are the custom designed invitations I've created for my Etsy Brides. They have graciously allowed me to resell the designs in my shop and have become some of my top sellers!

Q: Do you have any hidden talents (not showcased in your shop)?
A: I actually do! I can sew!! I've been sewing handbags for a couple of years (I love handbags!) and I've been working on screen-printing my own fabric and making those cute metal frame clutches, soon I will be selling them on my shop.

Q: What inspires you (objects, people, other crafters, shops on Etsy, etc.)?
A: Finding inspiration throughout the day can be somewhat of a challenge when chasing around the little guys. What inspires me the most in my work is nature, color, the great illustrations I find in children's storybooks, bold and simple designs, fashion, fonts (yes, I'm a total font geek) and my husband and three children inspire me everyday.

Q: Do you have any advice for new sellers?
A: Have great customer service and good communication with your buyers, I treat my customers the way I would like to be treated when buying something on Etsy.

Q: What are your future plans for your craft, shop, etc?
A: I'm expanding my shop to include more ready made items such as the metal frame clutches, bridal accessories, and fill-in party invitations. And, I have about three more invitation designs I'm working on to add for the next season.

Q: Just for fun, what's the last thing you bought on Etsy?
A: I purchased a pdf pattern (from Uberdomestic) for making my own cloth diapers.

I asked Star to share a picture, isn't it sweet?

Star and I got to know each other through the Etsymom team. If you haven't joined yet, I highly recommend it. You can also find Vreeland designs on Facebook.

Star is offering an exclusive coupon code for her Vreeland Design during the Family Tree Giveaway. Enter the code MODERN10 at checkout for 10% off your entire purchase!

Thanks for taking the time to write and send some spectacular work Star, it's been a blast to work with you! Hopefully we can do it again soon :)

Thankful Thursdays

I've been thinking about coming up with a regular feature on my blog of this nature. Well, why not start right now! When I got home from work tonight, I was thinking about how thankful I am for so many things. I'm thinkin' every Thursday I'll post a list of Three Things I'm Thankful For. I'd love it if you'd leave a comment doing the same!

1. I am thankful for Thursdays.
Thursdays are usually my last day of work before 3 much needed days off with my family. TGIT!

2. I am thankful for the wonderful people I've met through Etsy.
Jessa from littlepearlquilts introduced me to the Etsymom team, which has introduced me to countless individuals. This week I won the Christmas in July EMCA (Etsy Mom Curator Award) for the treasuries I created starring members of the Etsymom team. They've published a blog post about me! In the midst of my daily struggles, these little blessings mean so much to me.

3. I am thankful for God's answer to prayer.
We just found out my sister-in-law is expecting after many earnest prayers. God is good, amen?!

Girly Girl Giveaway Sponsor #3: littlepearlquilts

Remember my earlier post with the adorable bunnies from littlepearlquilts? It was my very first seller feature :) Well, Jessa decided shortly thereafter to donate an item from her shop for the Girly Girl Giveaway, isn't that sweet?! One luck winner will be receiving this handcrafted pocket crinkle toy:

Pocket Crinkle Toy - Pink and Yellow
Buy it here
I am very grateful to Jessa for introducing me to the Etsymom team. I've already met a few great people who have agreed to sponsor future giveaways and reviews through this great group. Jessa and I are both participating in the Etsymom team Christmas in July sale. When you spend $30 in littlepearlquilts you'll receive one of the crinkle toys free! I don't know if you noticed, but I'm a big fan of free :)

I could easily spend $30 in Jessa's shop on these alone:

Custom Handmade Play Food Set
Buy it here
I love it that she includes fish, eggplant and heirloom tomatoes in her play food set (I'm a dietitian so I love to see healthy play food rather than the typical bacon and pancakes).

I also love this little guy, so much personality in such a simple couple of stitches:

Green Jellyfish - Soft Cotton Baby Toy
Buy it here

Jessa has also made items with Mommies in mind, like these lovely lavendar pillows:

Buy it here

It has been a blessing to get to know Jessa

Q: Where did you learn your craft?
A: My grandmother did a few embroidery projects with me when I was very little, but I'm mostly self-taught.  All of the quilting I've learned through trial-and-error - which is great - but some days the "error" part can be really frustrating!

Q: What do you do when sales are slow in your shop?
A: I usually use the extra time to get my supplies and sewing space back under control.  It gives me a chance to go through my fabric stash and plan new projects.

Q: How do you balance work and home life/real job?
A:  I stay home to care for my toddler and for my mom, who has early-onset Alzheimer's disease - so my days are pretty full.  I do a lot of my sewing at night, and don't get as much sleep as I'd like (who does?)  My little one is just starting to play happily (and safely!) on his own, so I have been getting a little more time during daylight hours.

Q: How do you define success?
A: I feel pretty successful.  I've gotten wonderful, glowing feedback from my customers, which makes me really happy.  And I've been making enough money to buy all the pretty fabric I love - supporting that habit was my original sales goal.

Q: What has been your biggest success so far?
A:  I love the new baby quilts I've been making, like this one: http://www.etsy.com/transaction/51422600   And I love that they've been selling so quickly, because it means I get to make more!

Q: What is the last thing you bought on Etsy?
A: I bought this sweet little kit as a birthday gift for my best friend - I can't wait for her to get it!  http://www.etsy.com/listing/64116274/zodiac-embroidery-kit-diy-constellation?ref=pr_shop

littlepearlquilts has my longest running coupon code. Use MODERNFREE at checkout to receive free shipping on any purchase.

Thank you Jessa, for taking the time to make something really special for this giveaway and giving us the opportunity to get to know you! I hope we will be working together for years to come!
