Box of Pearls Review & Giveaway

I just love browsing Etsy, and by chance the other day I stumbled upon this beautiful little shop called Box of Pearls. Amanda Thompson, owner and operator, was kind enough to send me a little something to review.

She's also giving a $25 gift certificate to Box of Pearls
to one of my lucky blog readers!

This delicate chevron stripe necklace was the first thing that caught my eye in Amanda's shop.

The funniest thing happened to me while writing this blog post. My sister stopped by with a birthday present, this necklace! She found it using my Etsy favorites! I wore it all day Sunday and I couldn't love it more. It is the perfect color combination (silver chevron, gold chain), the perfect length (17 inches) to wear with everything, and simply stunning. I just can't believe the timing of this gift!

Box of Pearls has so many wonderful pieces. I believe these fun little personalized initial rings were what brought me there in the first place.

I love this dainty little bracelet. I sent Amanda a list of my favorites and asked her to surprise me and she sent this beauty. I wore it yesterday as well.

I have a very small wrist and it's very hard for me to find bracelets that work for me, which is probably why I have less than a handful. This bracelet fits just perfectly, and feels light as a feather! She didn't know it when she sent it, but the saying fits me perfectly. We've been talking to our 5 year old son a lot lately about the golden rule. The bracelet is a good reminder for me to follow by example.

The craftsmanship of Amanda's jewelry is impeccable. I will most definitely be visiting Box of Pearls again soon for gifts and staple pieces. I think the value is exceptional for such high quality, handmade, one-of-a-kind jewelry.

I asked Amanda to answer a few questions, here's what she had to say:

Q: Tell us a little about yourself
A: I’m proof that life can steer you in an unexpected direction.  With a degree in Exercise Physiology, I somehow ended up working as a restaurant and catering manager for almost ten years and a personal trainer for about four years. Then, after marrying and becoming pregnant, my husband and I decided that me staying home with our little girl was the best decision. So, as most busy bodies do, I found a way to keep productive by developing my jewelry-making hobby into a legit business.  It's a juggle, but I wouldn't want it any other way!
Q: When did you start making jewelry?
A: I started making jewelry in 2004 as a hobby, for my friends, my family, and myself. It soon developed into monthly showings at local art galleries around town.  My style was completely different from what it is today. Lots of color and beads :)

Q: Do you have a favorite or special piece of jewelry you wear often?
A:  I find that I have a bit of jewelry A.D.D.  I generally wear more simple, everyday pieces, but because I'm constantly looking to try new designs, I often want to change out my pieces.  I generally commit to jewelry for a week or two, then want something new, ha! My general style is layered delicate necklaces, stacked bracelets, with beads, chain, and shaped wire. I love dangly earrings with colorful stones and movement to them.

Q: What inspires you?
A: I’m inspired by people who make a profession out of the craft or service that they enjoy.  It takes a lot of patience, vision, and determination to work toward a profession that highlights who you are.  I love that art and business can collide to allow people to create and be a legitimate source of income. In college, I remember feeling like I had to pick an available profession from the list provided. It’s not always easy to find that “thing” to base your entire education on, and from which to build a life long career. It’s a bit premature, as a teen or early twenty something to be that focused and clear.
Q: Any advice for new Etsy sellers?
A: It took me a couple of years to understand that selling on Etsy takes real commitment. Customers have to be lead to your shop; they don't just come because you have a presence. You have to love your shop as if it’s your own home.  Be artistic with your photos, be clear and descriptive with your listing details, and be available to your customers.  Etsy is a platform for real creators. As a buyer you aren't dealing with a huge company, but most often, a single person/shop owner.  Remind your customers of that in how you respond to their questions, suggestions, order requests, and packaging.  They will appreciate knowing you are creating for them.

Q: Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 years?
A:  I hope much like where I am today; being available for our daughter as she moves through life, while juggling a jewelry career that fits the into the mold of our lives.  I love the growth I'm experiencing, but because jewelry is a job I do from home, I will always have to manage my work vs. home time carefully.

Q: Your giveaway was one of my most popular of all time!
Why do you think your products appeal to such a wide variety of readers?

A:

I think this might be because of the variety of items I offer.
I have things for “DYI’ers” but I also sell other things already made for a variety of occasions,
such as seals/stickers, tags, twine, etc. Who doesn't love doesn't love stickers?

Q: As we know, you are a busy lady!

What have you been up to lately, other than running a fabulous Etsy shop?

A:

Yes. I’m about to finish my Masters degree this summer and I’ve been very busy finishing experiments and working on my thesis defense. It has been one of the busiest semesters ever with the juggling work/baby/house/etsy, and everything in between. The good thing is that hard work pays off (and having a supporting husband too!). We’ll be moving to Wisconsin later this year and I will be starting my Ph.D in Neuroscience next summer. Yay!

6 Vintage Postage Stamps thank you Tags - You choose color scheme - Merci beau coup

Q: What is your favorite item to make?
A:

Seals/stickers are my most favorite things to make. I love working with the customer to come up with custom designs for their special occasion or business. (Ps. There are a lot of creative people out there!)

Baby blue and White Twine- 100 yards (300 feet) center-pull ball
Buy it here

Q: Any new products coming in the near future?

A: Well, since I will be moving in the Fall, I might want to do some “de-stash” sales to get rid of extra “stuff” I don't want to take with me to WI. I might also create new seal designs, and such, but I haven’t much time to plan right now given that all of my attention is on my thesis right now.

24 Thanks so much Kraft round labels/seals

Q: Just for fun, what are a few of your recent favorite Etsy stores?
Bought anything amazing lately?

A: I actually love shopping on etsy for me, and my family either through this account or another one I have. One of the last few things I ordered was this cute mustache seal

that I’ll probably be using to create some neat stuff soon.
I also ordered some time ago these super unique little earrings which I wear almost all the time.

And of course, everyone deserve a little treat, and these smores are just that… they are AMAZING (I’ve also tried her chocolate chip cookies and they are pretty good too!)

Meet the Artist and Giveaway: Kathleen from Smiling Tree Toys

Next up for grabs is a gift certificate to Smiling Tree Toys!

I really think you're going to have a lot of fun spending this gift certificate.
How do I know? Justin and Kathleen sent me one of these adorable little trucks.
It is simply amazing! The edges are remarkably smooth, I've never seen or felt anything like it.

organic toy car, a natural wooden toy - OLD-SCHOOL TRUCK - wood baby toys, eco-friendly for toddler, kids, preschoolers
Buy it here
I love the contrast of the dark against the lighter wood. And it glides across the floor with such ease.
You will not find anything like it anywhere else. I guarantee you'll be satisfied with your purchase,
or in this case your free gift!

I'll be showing you  more of these funtastic creations
as we get to know the team behind them a little more.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: Our Etsy profile tells you more about us and what we were up to before Smiling Tree came to be.

We created our Etsy shop to support our family by doing something that brings joy to others, is gentle on Mother Nature, and allows us to give back to our community (we donate to Peace Corps youth projects for every toy we sell).

We love being work-from-home parents! The freedom to plan our daily schedules around play time, story time, and nap time is priceless.  And because the first few years of a little one’s life just fly by, we feel very blessed that we can earn a living while not missing a single moment of our daughter’s daily achievements and discoveries.

natural wood TEETHING gift set - organic eco-friendly wooden teethers for farm loving baby, Barnyard animal toys, homegrown organic finish

The name Smiling Tree Toys reflects our love of and appreciation for Mother Nature.  Our toys wouldn’t exist without her, and so we wanted our name to pay homage to the trees that allow us to transform them into wooden fun for little ones.  The gorgeous grain patterns, coloring, and silky smoothness of organically finished hardwoods just can’t be beat!  We do everything in our power to keep our environmental footprint very small; we like to think that all of the earth-friendly things we do bring a smile to the trees we use. (see http://www.etsy.com/shop/smilingtreetoys/policy  for some of the ways that we’re eco-friendly)

Q: What's it like working together?
A: Depends on the day (just kidding)!  It's exciting to be in business with your spouse and best friend - we get to celebrate shared victories, offer encouragement when one or the other needs it, and eat lunch together.  We make the effort to keep things light-hearted and personal so that "business" doesn't get in the way of enjoying each other's company and remembering why we're in this together.  Some days are harder than others, but all-in-all it certainly beats working a 9-5 job for somebody else!

wooden PLAYGROUND pretend organic toys - all natural safe non toxic, for montessori kids, original creative learning, imagination toys
Buy it here
Q: Where did you learn to woodwork?
A: Justin's always been passionate about working with his hands and we both hold a deep admiration for trees and natural life.  Justin has lots of experience building houses, and over the years he's gradually taught himself the more detailed work of making toys, cutting boards, and other wooden items.

Q: Your toys are lovely, such a wonderful idea. What was your inspiration?
A: Our design inspiration comes to us in many, sometimes unexpected, ways.  Often it’s when we’re playing with our daughter, nieces, and nephews.  Other times it’s every day household items and the way our little one interacts with them that get the creative juices flowing. (You know, all of the things that aren’t made for kids but that they insist on playing with instead of their toys…)

20 piece organic wood blocks - all natural wooden toys, building block set, eco friendly for montessori toddlers, kids, babies
Buy it here
Q: What do you think sets your shop apart from other similar shops on Etsy?
A: We're in love with what we do (we're so lucky!), and that shows through in all facets of our shop - original designs, attention to detail, our story, the "human" factor that's always present in our descriptions, extra-friendly customer service, and that we use our very own homegrown organic wood finish.  It's comprised of camelina oil grown on Kathleen's family farm (camelina is a relative of flaxseed), and beeswax from our bee hives.  Read more about it on our blog

natural wooden xylphone toy - handmade musical piece for the montessori baby, earth friendly with homegrown organic finish
Buy it here
Q: Any new products in the making?
A: Oh, where do we begin?  We’ve got oodles of new and different design ideas up our sleeves.  Like most small business owners, our minds never stop running. Justin even keeps a small notepad on his nightstand for those “aha!” moments that come to him in the middle of the night! Our big secret: beginning in early 2012, we're taking Smiling Tree to a whole new level! We'll be offering personalized toys and will be adding lots more educational items with numbers, letters, and other fun stuff.

Q: Any advice for new sellers on Etsy?
A:  Tell your story, be friendly and approachable, pay attention to details, practice, practice, practice, take great, well-lit photos, and stay positive.

Q: Just for fun, what's the last thing you bought yourself on Etsy?
A:  So glad you asked!  I bought this t-shirt from New Duds for Justin for his recent 30th birthday. He loves it!
