Meet the Artist and Giveaway: Kathleen from Smiling Tree Toys

Next up for grabs is a gift certificate to Smiling Tree Toys!

I really think you're going to have a lot of fun spending this gift certificate.
How do I know? Justin and Kathleen sent me one of these adorable little trucks.
It is simply amazing! The edges are remarkably smooth, I've never seen or felt anything like it.

I love the contrast of the dark against the lighter wood. And it glides across the floor with such ease.
You will not find anything like it anywhere else. I guarantee you'll be satisfied with your purchase,
or in this case your free gift!

I'll be showing you  more of these funtastic creations
as we get to know the team behind them a little more.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: Our Etsy profile tells you more about us and what we were up to before Smiling Tree came to be.

We created our Etsy shop to support our family by doing something that brings joy to others, is gentle on Mother Nature, and allows us to give back to our community (we donate to Peace Corps youth projects for every toy we sell).

We love being work-from-home parents! The freedom to plan our daily schedules around play time, story time, and nap time is priceless.  And because the first few years of a little one’s life just fly by, we feel very blessed that we can earn a living while not missing a single moment of our daughter’s daily achievements and discoveries.

The name Smiling Tree Toys reflects our love of and appreciation for Mother Nature.  Our toys wouldn’t exist without her, and so we wanted our name to pay homage to the trees that allow us to transform them into wooden fun for little ones.  The gorgeous grain patterns, coloring, and silky smoothness of organically finished hardwoods just can’t be beat!  We do everything in our power to keep our environmental footprint very small; we like to think that all of the earth-friendly things we do bring a smile to the trees we use. (see http://www.etsy.com/shop/smilingtreetoys/policy  for some of the ways that we’re eco-friendly)

Q: What's it like working together?
A: Depends on the day (just kidding)!  It's exciting to be in business with your spouse and best friend - we get to celebrate shared victories, offer encouragement when one or the other needs it, and eat lunch together.  We make the effort to keep things light-hearted and personal so that "business" doesn't get in the way of enjoying each other's company and remembering why we're in this together.  Some days are harder than others, but all-in-all it certainly beats working a 9-5 job for somebody else!

wooden PLAYGROUND pretend organic toys - all natural safe non toxic, for montessori kids, original creative learning, imagination toys

Q: Where did you learn to woodwork?
A: Justin's always been passionate about working with his hands and we both hold a deep admiration for trees and natural life.  Justin has lots of experience building houses, and over the years he's gradually taught himself the more detailed work of making toys, cutting boards, and other wooden items.

Q: Your toys are lovely, such a wonderful idea. What was your inspiration?
A: Our design inspiration comes to us in many, sometimes unexpected, ways.  Often it’s when we’re playing with our daughter, nieces, and nephews.  Other times it’s every day household items and the way our little one interacts with them that get the creative juices flowing. (You know, all of the things that aren’t made for kids but that they insist on playing with instead of their toys…)

20 piece organic wood blocks - all natural wooden toys, building block set, eco friendly for montessori toddlers, kids, babies

Q: What do you think sets your shop apart from other similar shops on Etsy?
A: We're in love with what we do (we're so lucky!), and that shows through in all facets of our shop - original designs, attention to detail, our story, the "human" factor that's always present in our descriptions, extra-friendly customer service, and that we use our very own homegrown organic wood finish.  It's comprised of camelina oil grown on Kathleen's family farm (camelina is a relative of flaxseed), and beeswax from our bee hives.  Read more about it on our blog

natural wooden xylphone toy - handmade musical piece for the montessori baby, earth friendly with homegrown organic finish

Q: Any new products in the making?
A: Oh, where do we begin?  We’ve got oodles of new and different design ideas up our sleeves.  Like most small business owners, our minds never stop running. Justin even keeps a small notepad on his nightstand for those “aha!” moments that come to him in the middle of the night! Our big secret: beginning in early 2012, we're taking Smiling Tree to a whole new level! We'll be offering personalized toys and will be adding lots more educational items with numbers, letters, and other fun stuff.

Q: Any advice for new sellers on Etsy?
A:  Tell your story, be friendly and approachable, pay attention to details, practice, practice, practice, take great, well-lit photos, and stay positive.

Q: Just for fun, what's the last thing you bought yourself on Etsy?
A:  So glad you asked!  I bought this t-shirt from New Duds for Justin for his recent 30th birthday. He loves it!

My Etsy Christmas List - No. 38 Farm House Woodcraft

I must be in a woodsy mood :)

Okay, so most items can wait 'til Christmas. I think this one would be nice a little earlier!

Christmas Stocking Hanger - Custom Family Name Wood Sign
Buy it here

I haven't had a mantle in a long time. I don't know if you'd believe me if I told you how we hung the stockings last year. Up until last year we'd hung them on some heavy stocking holders sitting on our bookshelf.
Well, last year my almost 2 year old decided to climb that bookshelf. So...we decided to screw them down to the tv cabinet.... Anyhow this would be nice (Our now 2 year old hasn't figured out the spider-man moves yet!)

Farm House Woodcraft has a lot of cute personalized signs to pick from.
Here are a few of my favorites:

Amelia
Q: Tell us a little about yourself/your shop.
A: My name is Amelia and I live in Queens, New York with my husband and one year old son. VectorCloud is a home based design studio that I started about 1.5 years ago. VectorCloud focuses on laser cut design products ranging from jewelry, to clocks and home decor.

Q: How did you get started making laser cut designs?
A: I started this endeavor after working at an NFP helping kids in the Bronx learn CAD programs to create a variety of projects using a laser cutter. The experience really inspired me and opened up new perspectives on what I can do with my skills.

Q: What do you like about Etsy?
A: I love how convenient and easy it is for people to start selling their handcrafted items on Etsy. Etsy provides space for independent artists to develop.

Q: You've been very successful in your shop in a relatively short period of time. To what do you attribute your success?
A: Lots of exploration and hard work.
Amelia's Work Space

Q: Do you have any advice for new sellers?
A: One of the first things you have to ask yourself is who would buy your products and how do you differentiate yourself/store from the others. Finding a niche that not a lot of people have done already and that you are really good at should be the focus of your entrepreneurial journey.

Q: What is your favorite laser cut piece?
A: The Dress Up Polly Necklace. It takes a lot longer to make, but I've never seen anything like it on the market and it has been one of the best sellers.

Dress-Up Polly Necklace

Q: Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
A: I love browsing various blogs online, not only to find out what's 'current' but also to get inspired from many other disciplines such as interior design, graphic design, fashion, and children's products.

Q: What are your future plans for your shop
A: To do more wholesale and consignments, as well as exploring other lines of products.

Eco-Retro Desk Clock

Q: Just for fun, what is the last thing you bought yourself on Etsy?
A: The last thing I bought for my self was a handmade baby carrier from twirlybirdbaby  :) It looks similar to this one.

Let's show this hard-workin' mama some love.

As a dietitian, I just love healthy play food! Teaching kids about growing vegetables is a great way to get them to eat them!

This next one is a throw back, I think it's the reason I stumbled across this shop!

Armadillo Dreams is a husband/wife shop run by Dustin and Amanda Cowell. They make everything from start to finish! They live in beautiful Central Oregon with their daughter Luciana (born March 2007), son Lincoln (born August 2010), two dogs and backyard chickens.

Amanda also runs Violet since 2005 and Little Vintage Violet since 2008. In the summer of 2009 Dustin discovered a passion for woodworking. They combined their love for their children, natural materials, woodworking and Armadillo Dreams was born! Together they make an awesome team and love to work together as a family.

Let's see what Dustin had to say:

Q: What is the most popular item in your shop?
A: Our post popular items seem to change with the seasons. Right now our most popular item is our painted camping set and our weather
 set.

Q: You've only been open a short period of time and had a significant amount of sales. What do you think is the secret to your success?
A: I would say it’s our unique designs and our wide selection of items. My wife Amanda draws all of the patterns for our items and a lot of people seem to really like her style. We also try to carry a lot of items for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers to appeal to a wide market.

Q: What do you do when sales are slow?
A: This is when we work on new items. Putting new items in the shop always seems to help jump start sales again. Also, we do like to take a breather every now and then. We have two children of our own that we love to spend time with and we love to have family activities.

Q: Do you have a vice? Please share :)
A: We are both super big caffeine addicts. We drink black coffee at home and we also enjoy frequent visits to the local espresso shops. I have been in the process of attempting to break my caffeine habit by replacing it with juicing and increased water consumption. I have found that I have more energy throughout the day when juicing without the ups and downs from coffee, however after about a week or so of no coffee I get to missing it a lot and will often start up again. Hoping to one day completely remove it from my diet.

Q: Do you have any advice for new sellers?
A:
Taking good photos is probably the biggest piece of advice I can give. You have 5 photo spots for each item listed and you should use all 5, all the time. Take photos from lots of different angles. Try to make them eye catching and really “pop”. Don’t use busy backgrounds. It just takes attention away from what you want the customers to be looking at, your item. Don’t let your photos look armature and take them on carpet or your couch, spend a little money or go out in the woods and collect some nice backdrops. Good lighting is HUGE. Dark photos make it hard to see what you are looking at. Direct sunlight can also be a problem though. Take your photos in the shade outside on a sunny day.

Q: Just for fun, what's your favorite Etsy shop?
A: Well, I would have to say our shop, but that probably doesn’t count. Gosh, it’s hard to really say, there are so many great shops that I call my favorites. There is one particular shop that I have been admiring lately called leuckit. It’s a shop of “kitchen robots”, basically really neat pieces made out of recycled kitchen items. I am HUGE on recycling and I am fairly nerdy so this shop really appeals to me.

We're glad your a nerd Dustin, because nerds make rad stuff :)

Thanks for going us, and for offering a big exclusive coupon code, too! That's right friends, 20% off by using "moderntypography" at checkout!

Good luck with your future endeavors, hope to have you (or perhaps Amanda) back again soon :)

Introducing Nick and Kimber of Little Sapling Toys

I am delighted to introduce you to Nick and Kimber Christensen from Little Sapling Toys, the best selling toy shop on Etsy! I fell in love with their shop the moment I laid eyes upon their adorable

natural Owl Teething Toy - wooden teether for infants and toddlers
owl teething toy
Little Sapling Toys offer wood teethers, organic blocks, Montessori toys, safe infant and toddler toys, a modern rocking horse, traditional rattles and so more. Better yet, they are eco friendly AND they plant a tree for every toy sold!

Recently Kimber took the time to tell us a little about her shop and business on Etsy:

Q: What is the most popular item in your shop?
A: Wood teethers! We have close to 100 different styles to choose from. Babies and parents love them and they go over very well at baby showers.

Q: What is the best business decision you ever made?
A:  There were geometric and organic shaped wood teethers available in a couple Etsy shops and around the web (we carried a square). I sketched out a bird, hedgehog, elephant, squirrel, owl and whale for Nick to cut out and our selection of shapes have been a big hit ever since.

Q: Worst?
A: I get great business ideas and get carried away with them too quickly. I'll even start to purchase supplies for this new business that doesn't exist. I need to continually remind myself that I have a successful business that requires all of my time and effort.

Q: What advice do you have for new sellers on Etsy?
A: Put time and effort into a desirable and cohesive product line with professional pictures and descriptions.

Q: Just for fun, what is your favorite shop on Etsy?
A: We moved our family and business to Sheboygan, WI this month and have become good friends with Mike and Sally from Night Owl Craft Works (www.etsy.com/shop/nightowlcraftworks). Their beautiful pottery is of the highest quality, from clay to process to the glaze they make themselves.
Thanks Kimber, great advice!

Little Sapling Toys agreed to creating an exclusive coupon code for our readers! Enjoy 10% off using the code MOD10 at checkout.

Connect with Little Sapling Toys on Etsy, Facebook, their blog or visit their website

Thanks Nick and Kimber!
