Honizukle Review and Giveaway

It's been WAY too long since I did an Etsy giveaway, and lucky you, it's time again!
My friend Kimberly over at Honizukle is sending some sweet letterpress goodness our way.

The timing couldn't be better for stationary, right?
Summer is the perfect time to catch up on letter writing. I just used a cute little card from Kimberly to send a "thinking of you" note to my cousin who is a missionary in Guatemala. Nothing says thoughtful like a crisp, clean, handmade, letterpressed card from Honizukle's collection. One lucky winner is taking home a set of these beauties!

Fun fact about me, I used to work in a Hallmark store! Recently I was in the grocery store and needed a card for something and picked one up and was SHOCKED at the prices! Goodness me, I will think twice before buying a commercially made card again. Why spend $7 on a Father's Day card with an ugly mallard on it (I'm seriously not joking about the price or the duck) when there are pretties like this out there?

I am also delighted to see a ton of new giftables from Honizukle, too! Snazzy calendars, cute little notebooks, personalized notecards, and this lovely print, which speaks for itself.

Long, long ago I did an interview with Kimberly, but it feels like ages so I thought
we'd give it another go! Come along with me as we get reacquainted.

Q: What's new with you?
A: I've had quite an interesting few weeks. I meant to have some time to work on a few projects I haven't had a chance to work on, specially a big one I'm very excited about and my computer crashed on me and left me quite disappointed. Good news is, I have a new computer and I'm ready to get started on all those projects.

I've been completely into pattern making lately and that has given way to new products like notebooks and wrapping paper! I hope to dive into other areas as well. I just can’t create fast enough to keep up with my head.

Q: I love the new notebooks, what gave you the idea?
A: My latest one specifically is a pattern I’m obsessed with, my OWLS! I sort of stumbled upon these sketches because I was doodling one night on a new tool I recently acquired, a Cintiq Hybrid. It’s an amazing tool and the best part is that I can doodle right onto it without being tethered to anything. So I was doodling and owls just kept coming out and I loved each one. Once the sketching was over I cleaned them up and meant to just make them into a cute greeting card and it snowballed into a notebook and now a new notepad and wrapping paper!

Q: Your color palette and patterns are just perfect for this time of year! What inspires your choice of colors and designs?
A: I think about color a lot. When I created many of these I think I'd been longing for spring. I find a lot of inspiration in my sons. Their clothes, their toys, things like that but I also like working with color unexpectedly even though I find myself gravitating to the same types of colors. Right now I'm really into NEONS!

Q: When we spoke years ago, our shops were relatively new. I see many other shops go through drastic changes, even giving up. What do you think has kept you going?
A: I don't really think about that stuff. I have an inherent need to create, it’s not something I struggle with or have to work on, it’s just there. It’s part of me and it drives what I do. I’m glad that I'm like that because I think that’s what keeps my business going creatively. What gets in the way are silly things like the business aspects, marketing and that kind of stuff. I know it’s necessary and all but it’s not where my heart goes. I like to design and illustrate and make. However, I know that in order for people to know I'm here I have to do that stuff, so I do my best with that, too. One of the great things about having a million things I'd like to do and make all the time is that I never run out of plans for my business and I hope it always stays that way.

Q: If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself? What would you do differently, if anything?
A: One of the major things I don't like doing is the financial side of my business. I just don't care about that. I like seeing that there’s a profit of course, but all that tedious work behind it makes me dizzy. I did my best saving receipts and keeping spreadsheets for a few years and one day I had it and I looked for a service that synched all my accounts, cards, sales channels, all of it into one area. It shows reports and categorizes my spending and I can quickly see where I'm making money and how much I'm spending on supplies. If I could go back, I'd do that RIGHT AWAY! It’s so much more pleasant now come tax time to print out a few reports to send to my accountant than to have to run around printing receipts and spreadsheets and checking to make sure everything is right, because it never is. Hindsight being 20/20, I'd definitely spend the money on getting the financial side of business taken care of right from the beginning.

Q: Where do you see yourself in the future? Any new projects?
A: This question is so great right now because I have a big, secret project in the works. I'm really excited about it and I hope that it does well. I will definitely tell you more about it once it’s ready to make it’s debut.

In the future, I'd like to have a more diversified company. I love what I do but I keep adding to it. I struggle with making sure that each thing I add on makes sense because I like to do everything. I used to think I wanted a large company and I'm not sure about that anymore. I think I’d like my company to grow but I'm not sure how big anymore. I like the idea of it staying intimate. We'll see what happens and how it happens as it all unfolds. One thing I would like for my future is to be able to have my husband join me, that would be wonderful!

Q: Anything on your Etsy wish list you've just got to have, or made any recent handmade purchases?
A: I do have something on my Etsy wish list! These darling serving bowls from a shop called Marinski Handmades. I specifically like the mint serving bowl. I haven't had the chance to sit and really see what I’d like to order because since they're overseas, I want to make my shipping worthwhile. :)

Well now you've got me thinking about finances Kimberly! I can't wait to pick your brain about the service you use. There is always so much knowledge to glean from other Etsy sellers!

I can't tell you how in love I am with Kimberly's work.
When she showed me her latest collection, I thought it was so beautiful I just had to pin them.

Let me just tell you, the cards are even more beautiful in hand.
The stationery is thick and luxurious. The impressions are rich and precise.
The colors are modern and vibrant. The designs are one-of-a-kind.

Let's learn more about the talented and lovely Kimberly who made this all possible:

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A: A little about myself… well, it's hard to describe myself. I'm very driven. Anything creative inspires me and there's nothing artistic that I don't like to do or want to try my hand at. Of course, I have to narrow it down and concentrate on something to be any good at it. I love designing and working on the press. When I'm not working I'm spending time with my apprentice in the making, my two year old son, Jack. We have fun together and he and my husband inspire a lot of my work.

Q: How did you get started doing letterpress?

A: I've always loved stationery. Even before I came to the US. It was something my sister and I used to collect and really enjoy. I don't remember exactly when I first laid eyes on a letterpressed card but once I saw what could be done I knew I had to do it. My husband was kind enough to allow me to invest in my own press and I took an intensive workshop in Brooklyn that really cemented my love for it.

Q: Do you sell your products anywhere besides Etsy? How does it compare?

A: I don't yet. I've sold through my own site but I'm redoing it at the moment so I've only been selling through Etsy. I will hopefully be in a few shops soon and that's exciting but Etsy is a great marketplace. The kind of people that appreciate handmade are already going to Etsy to find things, so you already have the clients you're looking for. Etsy also puts so much work into their marketing and that's work they do for you. Each listing is like a little ad of your own. I think Etsy is a great place to sell and I don't think I'd ever stop selling there.

Q: What is your most popular item?

A: It's hard to say. I design new items for holidays so there are definite favorites during those times but I'd have to say what I sell the most are personalized sets. There's something great about getting or giving personalized stationery and it shows in the amount of sets I sell.

Q: What inspired your new collection?

A: My new collection is all Spring. I picked a palette I love and went with it. I was also very inspired by the Pearl Lettra stock I had acquired. It has a very creamy feel because of the color and that just made me want to do soft pastels and of course sweet designs. I'd say a lot of it was inspired by Mother's Day and my own mother actually. She loves flowers and used to draw them all the time. We're far away so I think about her a lot, this collection could be a subconscious ode to her too.

Q: Where do you see yourself/your shop in 3 years?

A: In three years I hope to be in stores. I'd really like to enter a store and see my cards on a counter. I know there would be a lot of satisfaction in that. I also hope to acquire another press, specifically a Vandercook. I have big ideas and I'd love to expand into other products and so I'd need a bigger press. I'd keep Charlotte of course but I'd love my studio to grow.

Q: Any advice for new shop owners on Etsy?

A: Stay on top of your Shop Stats. See what's bringing people in. If you have a product that you can tailor (like cards) pay close attention to the key words people are looking for and make a product that fills that need. Make sure to renew listings and to keep making new products to keep your shop fresh.

Q: Just for fun, what is the last thing you bought yourself on Etsy?
A: The last thing I got from Etsy was the cutest little apron. I saw it and knew it would be perfect for me to print with. Indeed, I've printed with it already and it's fantastic, no more searching for my tools all over the place. :)

Edmarie and Elmarie sent me a lovely set alongside the giveaway set and I can honestly say
they are even more charming in person than they are in the pictures!
I can't wait to send one off, such unique little messages and creatures.
I think it'd be just the thing to brighten anyone's day :)

If you haven't yet visited Smile Lifestyle,
be sure to head over and see all of the lovely cards they have to offer.
I'll be showing you a few as we get to know our sponsor.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: We are identical twin sisters residing in Aurora, Il, about 25 miles west of Chicago. Art and Design have always been a passion that we've shared. I am more of a fine artist and my sister is a graphic designer. We knew we've always wanted to take our work to the next level. In the Fall of 2010, we finally launched our
first paper goods line that combined our styles.

Q: What's it like working
together? Who does what as far as the creative process and running the business?
A: Working together is probably the easiest thing that we do. We have a really close relationship. And, in a literal sense, so close that we just live a couple of minutes away from each other. It makes it convenient for us to get together, whether it may be a brainstorming session or a weekend of screen printing. As far as our creative process goes, we basically start off with a brainstorm/intake meeting discussing our next collection. Then, individually, we interpret ideas appropriate to our own style. I design most of our illustrative collections, while my sister designs our patterned collection. We're both very involve in the production after designs
are finalized. In the business side of things, my sister handles most of the paper work and finance, while I manage a lot of the marketing.

Q: I love the "punny" greeting cards, they are very unique. How did this idea come about?
A: When we designed our first patterned collection, we didn't know it would become our signature line. We both love pattern and the shapes it creates around white space. It's almost elegant and hypnotizing when you stare at it. Our 'punny' sayings are the added surprise to break that 'hypnosis' and keep you smiling. We're  grateful for the feedback we've been getting from our customers and we'll keep these 'punny' cards coming.

Q: What is your most popular design?

A: The most popular design that we have is one of the Smile Signature line, "Love you like no otter". This card has been our best seller and have been featured on Etsy faves.

OTTER: Love you like no otter

Q: Any new designs in the works?
A: We are super busy preparing our Holiday collection, which we can’t wait to debut in the coming weeks. We will be featuring more hand illustrated designs that are quirky, colorful, and fun. In addition, we also added on to the Smile Signature line.

Q: Tell us a little about the events you are participating coming up soon. Will these be your first shows?
A: In addition to our Holiday collection, we are also debuting new collections at two big shows. We just finished up The DIY Trunk Show. Up next is the One of A Kind Show in Chicago, which has an Etsy pavilion. It will be held from Dec. 1-4 at the Merchandise Mart. We are ecstatic to take part and can’t wait to showcase the new collections that we have been working on.

Q: Just for fun, what are your favorite Etsy stores to window shop?
A: Edmarie- I am a big fan of Clare Elsaesser’s tastes orangey. I think that she’s such a brilliant artist. Her subject matters are just random moments in life, but she captures them in a way that makes them such beautiful moments.

Meet the Artist and Giveaway: Sarah from Cardamom Press

Warning! Sit down before you read this:
That's right, we're giving away letterpress stationery!
I've teamed up with Sarah over at Cardamom Press
who was kind enough to offer this fantastic set of cards:

Buy it here
Seeing as I'm obsessed with letterpress, I couldn't resist asking Sarah a billion questions, and I hung on every answer:

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: Hi there! I’m Sarah – printer, planner, organizer, and lover of books, ice cream, soft paper and fragrant spices.  I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, moved to San Francisco for 7 years, and missed the 'burgh so much that I ended up moving back.  I went to theatre school and worked as a stage manager for five years, but as much as I loved the work, I didn't love the hours, so I left the theatre to look for a new, less all-consuming love.  I got into letterpress after moving back to Pittsburgh 3 years ago, and in June 2010, Cardamom Press was born.  When I'm not working, I'm almost always reading, eating ice cream, spending time with my family, or hanging out with the dinosaurs at the museum.

Q: Where did you learn your craft?
A:  I actually knew nothing about letterpress until about a year and a half ago.  Every year, Lisa at Sapling Press does a Valentine's Day studio tour where she shows people around her studio, and then everyone gets to try out the press and print a few valentines of their own to take home.  I had taken a lot of printmaking classes throughout high school, but I had never even seen a letterpress before, so I thought it'd be fun to go to the tour and check it out; little did I know that it was going to change my life.  By the time I finished printing those four valentines, I was in love.  I went home and showed them to everyone I knew, and I couldn't stop thinking about going back and learning more.  So, I contacted Lisa to see if she would be willing to teach me, in exchange for helping her out around the studio.  That was February 2010, and in the last year and a half, Lisa has taught me more than I ever imagined possible - I've still got tons more to learn, but everything I know about letterpress I owe to her.  She's a fabulous teacher!

Q: What do you love about doing letterpress?
A:  The thing that I really love is the craft and skill involved in letterpress work.  I've always loved doing creative work, but I'm definitely a craftsman, not an artist - I'm much happier when there's a skill I can learn and work on and spend time perfecting.  I love that with letterpress, I can take a design done by one of the amazing artists I work with, and then use my craft to turn that design into a beautiful print.

Q: What do you find most challenging about letterpress?
A:  This might sound strange, but I think the most challenging thing about letterpress is that every project presents a whole new challenge.  One of my card designs might require a very tight registration - that's how well the two colors of ink line up with each other, since they're each printed separately - while I might want the next design to be printed in a very specific color that's tricky to mix.  That's one of the things I love about letterpress - every design is a new challenge, and I feel like with every piece I print, I learn something new about the craft.

Q: What do you think makes your work unique?
A: I hope that what makes my work the most unique is the artists I choose to work with - I'm always keeping my eyes open for artists and designers who have a unique style, something that's different from a lot of the letterpress work that already exists, but that will translate well into a letterpress print.

Q: Which artist's work do you most enjoy working with?
A:  I really love all of the artists that I've worked with, but I have to say that Erin Auses' Cityhopper architecture drawings hold a special place in my heart.  Erin is one of my closest friends, and without her gorgeous drawings, I might never have been inspired to start my business in the first place.  As soon as I came home from that first studio tour, I talked to her about designing a full line of Pittsburgh architecture cards (Erin grew up in Pittsburgh too), and the whole company sort of grew up around that line.  I love the Pittsburgh cards because they inspire a sort of warm, fuzzy, nostalgic feeling in people - everyone I show them to has a story about one of the buildings, and I love hearing people share their memories about our city.  That's what we tried to do with the Seattle cards as well, and we're planning to expand the line into several more cities over the next few years.

Q: Who/what inspires you?
A: Oh, there are so many things, I don't even know where to start!  As far as inspiration for the letterpress work I do, I'm more inspired by color than anything else - I'm constantly ripping pages out of magazines and taking photos of colors around me to remind me of color palettes I want to use in my work.  Pinterest has been a lifesaver for that - I started a pinboard to keep all of my color inspiration on, and I'm slowly adding things to it as I find them.  When I go to print a new line of cards, I always look there first for inspiration.

In running my business and living my life, I'm actually more inspired by words and quotes than by visual things, so I've got an ongoing list of my favorite quotes from people who inspire me.  Walt Disney, Jim Henson and Fred Rogers are my personal heroes, but this is my very favorite inspirational quote:  "If you want to build a boat, do not instruct the men to saw wood, stitch the sails, prepare the tools and organize the work, but make them long for setting sail and travel to distant lands." ~ Antoine de Saint Exupery

Q: How did you get started on Etsy?
A:  I actually set up a shop on Etsy several years ago to help my mom sell her knitted baby hats, so when I got Cardamom up and running, it was an easy step to set up a shop of my own to sell my cards.  Most of my focus is on my wholesale business, but I love that Etsy gives me the chance to talk to the people who are actually buying my cards, not just the stores that are selling them!

Q: What is the most popular item in your shop?
A:  The Pittsburgh and Seattle cards are all really popular in their respective cities, but I think Natalie's birds have the most universal appeal.  The Sparrow is by far the most popular of the birds, and surprisingly, people are gobbling up (no pun intended!) the Turkey cards too.

Q: Has your work received any special attention?
A:  The Pittsburgh cards were included in Pittsburgh Magazine's gift guide this past Christmas, which was very exciting.  I've had the honor of being featured on several stationery blogs too - mostly in holiday card and gift roundups - and the fabulous Molly at Pushing Papers has been kind enough to feature my cards several times as well.  She's got a great eye for stationery, so it's always flattering when she shows off my work!

Q: What is your favorite treasury you've been featured in?
A: There are so many great treasuries, it's hard to remember them all.  I think my most recent favorite is this Hello treasury - I especially love that little goldfish!
Hello Letterpress Note Cards - Box of 8
Buy it here
Q: Where do you promote your shop?
A:  I have a blog where I try to post updates on what I'm doing and new cards I'm working on - plus some other interesting tidbits, like features of the artists I'm working with and recipes for my favorite cardamom-spiced foods.  I also have a facebook page, and I tweet a good bit as well.

Q: What are your future plans for your business/shop?
Sunbonnet Babies - Letterpress Notecards Box of 5
Buy it here
A:  I'm working on expanding the lines I have right now - Erin is hard at work on drawings for a set of Chicago architecture cards, and I've got a few more of Natalie's bird illustrations that I'm printing on a new set of cards this week.  I'm also talking to a few other artists about designing new lines of cards - one with vintage quilt block designs, and another with anime/comic-book-style drawings, possibly of dragons or dinosaurs (I love dinosaurs!).

Q: What is the best advice you've received regarding Etsy?
A:  The absolute best advice is that just being on Etsy isn't enough.  Anytime I list new things in my shop, I make sure to post about them on twitter and facebook, and I try to use my blog to send people towards the shop as well.  You have to find ways outside of Etsy to promote your shop, or you'll get lost among the crowd - there's just too much great stuff!

Q: Just for fun, what is the last thing you bought yourself on Etsy?
A:  I just bought this set of four prints from StrawberryLuna, a local Pittsburgh screen printer.  She does amazing work, and I've been coveting these prints since I saw them at a craft show last spring - I'm so excited to finally have them hanging in my sunroom!

Sarah sent me a sample pack of her cards, isn't that sweet?! They came wrapped in my favorite...red and white twine! But the best part? The array of colors, the amazing textures of the fine papers, the rich character of the images...okay ALL of it is spectacular. I'm going to have a hard time using this stationery, I just want to frame it! I'd tell you which one is my favorite, if I could pick just one! I can honestly tell you, as a buyer you are going to be VERY happy with whichever items you choose.

On that note, Sarah has graciously offered to provide an exclusive coupon code to my readers during the giveaway! Run on over to Cardamom Press and fill up your cart and you'll get 10% off your entire purchase using the code MODERN.
